On the green hills of Lake Neuchâtel, while I was at the sports games, nothing left me then to assume that Vaumarcus host the watch brand Marvin. My friends and I were 18, we were in the 70s.
Switzerland, country of chocolate, villages in blooms and major banks showed a face of freshness and serenity. We found abroad without changing the language. It was called “the exotic mountains”!
However, when a little free time allowed us to visit the “big city”, we were not going to stroll around the lake, but droll at the wonderful shops of watches.
I was wearing at that time a small mechanical Nivada, and religiously winded it up every morning. My passion for watches is probably appeared during this period, which, paradoxically was that the advent of quartz.
I have since worn many watches, Timex, Tissot, Yema, but also small Omega for which I tried not to spend more than I won. Then passed the time of the Japanese, I had to reach a step. I have saved for 20 years to offer me a Zenith (Oh yes, among the first price), without actually reaching the pinch of heart I was waiting so impatiently!
This second level woke me up at last!
The watches having crossed many steps; I discovered in July 2010 as saying one of my blog reader montres-bonnes-affaires: “this world between the Rolex and Swatch” (Sieger).
I realized that the market was segmented into several levels more or less visible to the naked eye. From the bottom to the very high-end materials, mechanisms and especially the finish seemed very diverse, but overall it inscribed: the watch of every day, cheap and almost disposable, the watch as a need to exist, some “fashion” and then the inaccessible, prohibitively expensive and extravagant timepieces.
If this image is enough to those who were out of necessity, this is actually not that simple.
The watch can obviously meet this first category of people who need to know now, just one of the beings who want shine in society and satisfy the classes of those who face high social status were you can have a high quality product. Each has a right to exist and the market meets their expectations. But a new family of people is rising among the less fortunate in the last category, the one disappointed with the “shining gold” or amateurs of ergonomics and reliability: the geeks!
They are men and women who do not want to be outdone by either the technical nor the quality nor the inventiveness.
They are also passionate! They will find the best brands among mid-range, beautiful objects, useful, reliable and reasonable to meet their needs.
Happy men we are, manufacturers have realized that everything is important, the timepiece became the best compromise of all factors considered: a flawless production, uncompromising quality, a careful attention to the balance of subject, proven mechanics, a harmonious design, and a reasonable price! Finally, anything but disposable, the “fashion” or luxury!
The Swiss, the Germans, the French may be among the first invested in this storyline, but followed by the English, Americans and Asians especially today.
The Japanese had learned long ago to do better than Europeans, but also less expensive, have long inhabited the market. And Hong Kong, Singapore and especially China have their suit.
The Republic of Singapore, the exact tip of Malaysia is a small state in Southeast Asia inhabited by five million people – do not ignore it, watches are already fashioned by Europeans standards (Dievas, Movas)!
But in China, probably hatched in Wonderland: Today stifled by his fame as an infringer territory, this great country will have the means to offer such beautiful watches as well as sustainable in the very near future.
The Asians market in search of legitimacy has certainly advantages long (Sea Gull) and an age-old knowledge now.
The fact remains that the “reputation” and “representativeness” European opportunities are the best time for old continent. The Chinese, like all Asian long will continue to enjoy all the products of medium and high range manufactured by the “big eyes”. We will see it soon in Chinese watch fair, were the Marvin brand, will be presented.
